Profile: Amelia Husnik

During my high school years I became interested in drawing, painting and art history thanks to a wonderful art teacher, who was an artistic painter as well.

After becoming a teacher in special education I joined an informal group of people who liked to get together one evening per week to paint under the leadership of a professional artist. As was the fashion in those days in Holland, much emphasis was placed on free expression, greatly ignoring technical instruction of any kind.

In 1969 I imigrated to Canada, where work and family life took priority, and for years there was just no time to practice or develop any painting skills. After almost 30 years living in Sault Ste. Marie we moved to London, where soon after my husband died.

A year later I stepped inside the Byron library to see what the painting group was all about, and I have not left since! When I found out about the many painting opportunities in and around London I made it my goal to learn and practice as much as I could.

I joined several painting clubs and painting groups, attending workshops as much as possible, and I have been taking advantage of the many art courses that are offered in Ontario, Michigan, Wisconsin and overseas.

I have taken part in a number of Novacks trips to Italy, France, UK and Ireland under leadership of Kevin Bice; to be able to sketch and paint those beautiful locations is a great experience. Also trips in Canada and overseas with a small group of friends or alone provided lots of opportunities to paint and sketch on location.

In 2010 I joined Sunset Arts, a co-operative artgallery in Grand Bend.

Since the year 2000 I have regularly taken part in a variety of local and provincial art shows.

I am very grateful for the many wonderful people I have met and for the encouragement of teachers and fellow painters alike.

A Homage to London's Downtown

London Streetscapes: A Homage to London’s Downtown

A series of historic downtown streetscapes by London artist Cheryl Radford, described by heritage advocate Genet Hodder as "a heritage lover’s dream," will be exhibited at Museum London's Art Rental and Sales Gallery during July and August, 2012.

"I love these streetscapes because they truly reflect the aesthetic sense of the buildings, and show a genuine appreciation of the craftsmanship in their heritage features.” says Hodder. “Cheryl manages to capture with great accuracy the details of each building, yet does not make them into dry linear drawings. The buildings come alive on the page through her artistic vision. This exhibit of streetscapes is an inspiring homage to London’s downtown.”
The London pieces are part of Radford's larger series, Streetscapes: 50 in 50, a year long project that the artist launched to mark her 50th birthday in May 2011. "I was inspired by my friend, Kym Wolfe, who did 50 fabulous things the year she turned 50," says Radford. "This is my twist on her venture." The 50 drawings are a combination of ink, graphite and watercolour, with image size ranging from miniature to 8” x 13”.

Some of the 50 streetscapes were sketched onsite in locations that Radford has visited, including during a trip to Italy with a group of London artists in the fall of 2011. Wayne and Rachel Neal walked by as Radford was starting to draw SS013 Venice, Italy just outside the monastery Istituto Canossiano, in the historic Dorsoduro district of Venice. When they came back a couple of hours later the drawing was almost finished.

"Cheryl was able to capture the essence of the location, with a pen and pencil. This simple line drawing accurately represents what we saw when we walked out the door of the monastery," says Neal. "We had to have that drawing. It’s a great reminder of a great trip.”

Radford fascination with architecture started in 2007 in France with a plein air drawing of a Limoux, France streetscape. She drew it one building at a time. After completing a section she would move down the street to draw the next section, and so on, until she had completed a front elevation style streetscape.
"After that I started to take notice of the architecture right here in London, Ontario," says Radford. "I had to travel half way around the world to appreciate what was right here at home."

Artists in Italy

Shutter and Brush presents:
Artists In Italy Holiday Remembered.

As many of you know, we went, together with a group of very fine artists, on a Novack’s trip to Italy with our wonderful guides Kevin and Daphne Bice. It was an outstanding trip on all levels. A wonderful camaraderie seemed to exist from the first moment, and together we wined and dined, explored and discovered, and of course, took photos, sketched and painted. Please accept our personal invitation to come and see some of the art and photography which came from many of the artists in our company.

We would be delighted to have you join us and the artists at the Open House on Saturday March 10, 1-4pm. at Shutter & Brush Galleries (194 Main St. Port Stanley, ON)

Identity Transfer

Main Gallery, St. Thomas-Elgin Public Art Centre
Opening Reception: Saturday January 14, 2012 2-4pm
It's a rare artist that hasn’t at one time or another attempted a self-portrait. Sometimes its for the most obvious reason, that in portraying his/herself has a ready, willing and free model. At other times artists may use self-portraits to advertise their skills, practice their craft, explore some inner turmoil or stake a place in history. Whatever reason the artist might think they had for the work, the act of creation always reveals something about the creator. Its always possible to learn a little more about the artist by reading between the brush-strokes or medium.
